When Worlds Collides - Mars cometh

Actually "When Worlds Collides" is the title of an old scifi movie, which I thought would be a catchy Friday's posting about something that will happen only once in our lifetime. My friend Rox forward the following to me. I thought it was kind of interesting. Check it out!

-DB-

Since this won't happen again for between 5,000 and 60,000 years...might be worth a look now. I'm sure some of you already know and are watching for this phenomenon, but if you aren't - here's your chance.*

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month the Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Share this with your children, grandchildren, friends, and family!
NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

Lost Battlestar

What IF ...

The cast & crew of Battlestar Galactica (BSG)

Meets ...

The castaways of "Lost"

I was surfing the 'net the other night and saw a funny reference to two of my favorite TV shows. The question posed on that blog was "what would happen if the cast of the new 'Battlestar Galactica' crashed landed on the "Lost" island ??

Check it out! http://blogs.nbc.com/office/entry_20.html

Here is some excerts from the blog:

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE CAST OF BATTLESTAR GALACTICA CRASH LANDED ON THE ‘LOST’ ISLAND???!!!

First of all, they would have lasers. Adama would quickly secure the
hatch for his crew. The survivors of the Oceanic flight 815 would be
herded up like little children and inspected like cattle.

“Could these people actually be Cylons!” Starbuck would be thinking
to herself. Then she would think, “That one who calls himself Sawyer
is pretty hot. I wonder what he would look like swimming in just his
jeans.”

Starbuck would take Sawyer on a reconnoiter of the island and they
would visit the swimming hole and start necking. And then Kate and
Apollo would stumble upon them and they would all be getting it on
when a huge crashing would come through the jungle and one of those
huge unseen monsters would tower above them (the monsters that
disappeared after episode 8 of season 1) and they would be
screaming.

AHHHHH!!!!

Cut to commercial.

Meanwhile back at the hatch, Adama would want to imprison the “Lost”
cast in the old cave with the creek in it, but president “Roslin”
would want to reason with them and have both casts mate in order to
create more surviving humans.

Meanwhile the Cylons would have contacted the Others and they would
form an “alliance” to destroy all the good humans and especially that
annoying French woman who lives on the other side of the island.

Starbuck would shoot the unseen monster and Sawyer would say
something witty and sexy, like “Nice shot, blondie. Where’d you
learn to shoot a laser like that? From watching princess Leia?”

She would say, “Put a sock in it Sawyer” but the attraction would be
too much for them and they would have to start making out again.

I Like how this is going ....

Living in "TVLand"

TVland

On cable television, there's a channel that is devoted to retro (read: rerun) television. I think there's even a cartoon network version of it called "Boomerang". I wished I had "Boomerang" at home, I'll be watching "Thundarr the Barbarian" all the time!

Anyways, my roomie and I were watching some old "Sanford and Son" episodes, and it started me talking about all the programs that I watched as a child (keep in mind, I'm really dating myself here especially if you never heard of the programs I'm about to talk about). I remember watching campy episodes of "Batman" that used to come on twice a week and the special episode that starred "The Green Hornet" and Kato (aka Bruce Lee)! Now who didn't have the hots for "Catwoman" back then!

I grew up on a steady diet of war shows like, "The Rat Patrol", "Combat!", "Twelve o'clock High", etc ... I also remembered watching alot of WWII movies, like "Hell is for heros", "Return to Batan", "The Longest Day", "Patton", "Battleground", etc ... It was interesting that Gamera-San (my roomie) remember most them as well (since we're the same vintage).

"COMBAT!" with Lt. Hanely & Sgt. Saunders / "The Rat Patrol"

I think I was having flashbacks to "The Brady Bunch" and "Partridge Family" episodes too. Dang! I know that I was totally watching way too much TV back then!

Now a days, you can pretty much buy alot of the old shows on Dvds now!

Aaaah, the good old days (now available on DVD)!

DB's New Golf Blog

Okay, okay ... enough about golf, huh?!

Well, just so that I still have a place to write and post pictures about my new hobby (some would say it's my "crack habit"); I created a new blog just about this obsession of mine! Come visit this site when you get tired of reading my life outside of golf (or come visit my Xanga site).

So after today, no more golf talk (except in passing). See Peeps, I listen to you!!!

72 hours this weekend

Whew!! So busy this weekend, not enough time to blog ... here's a 72 hour summary:

When I last wrote, we had a "Summer Fiesta" at the office with yummy Mexican food (all we all got "food coma" afterwards).

Our" resident cubicle decorators" go to work after hours!

Had House Church on that same Friday evening: Our food theme was "Japanese" or atleast some kind of Asian theme food (I made plain rice Spam Musubi ... which is more Hawaiian, I know). Pastor Kev shared about Jesus meeting the woman at the well and what she did afterwards (sharing her testimony). Two of our own shared on Friday: Dorene and Brice. Afterwards we broked into smaller groups and prayed for one another. Mister Gamera-San and I stayed until about 11:30 or so (since we carpooled).

Yummy food at House Church on Friday!

I stayed up till 3am (gotta make my weekend last!) surfing on the internet, cleaning up all the old video on my DVD recorder.

Saturday was totally VEGGIE DAY ... didn't-wanna-do-nuthing-day-'cause-it-was-darn-hot-day! Well, I did do two loads of laundry, edit some videos and watch my one of my favorite movies "Mr & Mrs Smith" or atleast some parts of it. I just bought the two soundtracks from "Mr & Mrs Smith" on I-Tune earlier this week.

Got up at 4am to play 18 holes at Birch Hills GC this morning for this morning 6am tee time (and stayed out there even while it was lighting and raining! Oooooh, scary! You can read more about that on my new golf blog page: http://dbgolfingadventures.blogspot.com/2006/07/real-lighting-round-of-golf.html

DB playing in the rain (and lighting) on Sunday before church

Finally made it to church today at noon, it turned out that everything got pushed back alittle bit and I was able to hear most of Pastor Kev's message on wisdom today. A couple key points sort of hit home for me: 1) "Would things be different if I wasn't here?" 2) A story about a former NFL player who was a crack addict who got off on crack only to spend the rest of his life playing golf .... hmmm.

Pastor Kev teaching on wisdom

Cindy holds baby Nathan as mom Julie beams

Natalie in pigtails as Grace looks on

Pastor Kevin chats with Tim's worship team after service

We had a nice quarterly business meeting after service with our "Lee's sandwiches", and fruit and water from the local Costco.

9 holes at Little Rec (Long Beach)

"Little Rec" golf course in LB

DB arrives early!

even takes some practice putts

Joe arrives early too!

The group is all here!

A great golfing adventure awaits!

Joe thinks about the meaning of golf ...

the course is busy and our group hustles between holes!

Mike gets ready to tee

The big lagoon at the 7th hole

DB and his nemesis, the "ball magnet" lagoon!

Good thing we all have day jobs, we would all starve as professional golf players (except for Rodney)! It was probably one of the worst golf playing I've had since starting but as I've heard "a bad day golfing is better than a good day at work!".

Very frustration for everyone, but at least I finally got a good tee shot on the 9th with my 5 iron, too bad my putting was so bad that I couldn't convert it into an birdie or even a par!

I was hoping that my new Taylor-made driver would get me safely across that darn 7th hole lagoon where I lost a few balls the last two times I've played this course ... nope! I slice two shot straight into the lagoon!

Well, at least we all enjoyed a nice dinner at L & L BBQ!
