Epic Church: All in All (Colossians 3:1-11)

SERIES: All In All
TEXT: Colossians 3:1-11
SYNOPSIS: We are all shaped by the narratives in which live. The "American Dream," for instance, is one such story. The "good evangelical Christian" is another. These meta-narratives that we inhabit influence the values, practices, and contours of our lives. These narratives determine the kind of people we become. The Apostle Paul entreats the Colossians to live in the story of Christ (his life, death, and resurrection) as opposed to the story of the Empire, which he calls "that life" on "earth" with its "old self." Both Christ and Empire present visions of the good life. Both promise security, peace, and well-being. But which is which? What is the litmus test?  Paul says to look at our relationships, our community, the kind of people we are becoming.

Epic Church: All in All (Colossian 1:15-23)

SERIES: All In All
TEXT: Colossians 1:15-23
SYNOPSIS: Paul summarizes his theological guidance for the Colossians with a hymn extolling the all encompassing nature of Christ where the truest picture of God emerges.  This picture is important and often overlooked:  all of creation exists because God is primarily, a self-giving love.  That is what we see in Jesus, and that is the truest thing we are given to say about God.  And that's' what our hymns say, too!

Epic Church: All in All (Colossians 1:9-14)

SERIES: All In All
TEXT: Colossians 1:9-14
SYNOPSIS: An introduction to the series and Book of Colossians.
Like Epic, the church in Colossae is a young congregation whose faith in Christ is growing and bearing fruit, but also still developing and maturing. Their fine reputation has made its way to the apostle Paul, who continually thanks God for them in his prayers.  In our second installment, Paul communicates the content of which he prays: Namely that they live a life worthy of the Lord who has  brought them out of darkness into light. The assumption Paul makes is that the God who began a good work in them will complete it. Paul specifically prays that they may bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God, be strengthened with endurance and patience, while giving thanks the Father. In Paul, we get discipled in how to pray for others and ourselves.

Epic Church: All in All (new sermon series)

new Summer series in Colossians

SERIES: All In All
TEXT: Colossians 1:1-8
SYNOPSIS: An introduction to the series and Book of Colossians.
Like Epic, the church in Colossae is a young congregation whose faith in Christ is growing and bearing fruit, but also still developing and maturing. Their fine reputation has made its way to the apostle Paul, who continually thanks God for them in his prayers.  In his letter to them, Paul wants the faithful to know that because they have Jesus, they really do have it all. He is their all in all!  At Epic, we want to be all in with Jesus, too, as he is our all in all.  In chapter 1, we are given an inside look into the reason for Paul's commendation of this church, particularly the Colossians' faith in Christ, their love for all the saints, and the hope they possess through the gospel.  What can we learn from their commendation?
