Holidays in Mississippi

Christmas Eve flight back to da South ... was going smoothly until I landed in MSP airport. Scheduled 3:30 flight ended up leaving at 7pm but I did enjoying having two sets of empty rows on both legs of my flight and met some nice Canadian travelers along the way. Finally rolled in my hometown of Greenwood at 11pm local time that night (I started at 4am in California).

Dad using his new birthday/Christmas gift digital camera that I got him! Finally into the digital age after using film cameras all his life! Now just trying to explain to him how to get the photos out ... that's another story!

SERIES: Why Giving Is Go(o)d
TITLE: TITHING: ONE OF GOD'S GIFTS TO US
TEXT: Malachi 3:6-12
SYNOPSIS: As we celebrate this Advent Season and the ultimate gift that is Jesus, we turn our thoughts toward our own giving and exploring why it is good and godly. This week we look at the practice of tithing. We will look at the evidence for tithing in Scripture as a regular, expected discipline that ultimately is good for us. We will answer questions such as Does the Bible teach a tithe? Does it still apply today? Does the full tithe go to the church? Is a tithe based on gross or net income? What happens if I don't tithe? What happens if I do?

SERIES: Why Giving Is Go(o)d
TITLE: Giving Is Its Own Reward
TEXT: 2Corinthians 8:9-9:11
SYNOPSIS: As we celebrate this Advent Season and the ultimate gift that is Jesus, we turn our thoughts toward our own giving and exploring why it is good and godly. This week we look at the foundational principle of sowing and reaping, of investing and increase. This in light of Jesus, who though rich, for our sakes become poor, so that we might become rich...rich in every way so we can be generous on every occasion.

48 weeks and 30lbs later

That's the amount of time between getting laid off from my work of over 17 years to a new beginning as a newbie at new company (this coming November 1st) and the amount of weight that I've lost in that time.

It's also significant that I believed that God has given me that time to have space to deal with my own health issues, my brother's illness and eventually passing, and some self examination and self improvement on my part.

Yes, I did play a lot of golf during the earlier months and got to go on some fun outing: (two camping trips, a Monterey Bay trip, and a Mammoth fishing trip), bought new camera equipment: took alot of semi-professional photos for friends and for a community project. Also got re-involved in another life long hobby and was recently certified as an instructor to educate others in that sport.

Because of my time off from work, I was able to spend three with my brother Herbert and his family, went to Toronto Canada with my dad and brother in hopes of finding a cure for my brother's illness, sequentially had the adventure of our lives there. After my brother's passing, was able to reconnect with many of my brother and my old college friends and re-live some of our "glory" days.

Thru this time, I experienced much grace from God and much love, support and encouragement from many friends and family members. I just wanted to say "Thank You" for being part of God's plan to not let me dew in despair when I could have easily wrote off the rest of the world and have been the "Grand Marshall" of my own pity parade.

Because of all of you, I've been the healthiest I've ever been in years. According to my doctor, I look years younger (for those of you who help celebrate my big ONE in January) but more importantly, I feel younger, full of energy, and full of hope for the future.

This is my love letter to you guys!

Much Blessings!

DB

P.S. (updated title / originally "42 weeks" but my return to work was delayed into December 13th) ... still a blessing!

SERIES: [More Than] POINT A TO POINT B [But Everything In Between]
TITLE: RECEIVING AN ASSIST
TEXT: Joshua 2
SYNOPSIS: With God, it's always more than getting us from Point A to Point B; everything in between counts, too. On the journey to the Promised Land, God was not moving the Israelites toward a destination, but shaping them as a people. In Chapter 2, we look at the encounter the spies have with a prostitute/innkeeper by the name of Rahab, and how her assist allowed them ultimately to overcome Jericho. Why would God use and spare the life of this woman? And what does this say about our need for assistance on our journey?
