Current Series: The Call to Discipleship
Message: EXCUSES, EXCUSES
Text: Luke 14:1-24
Synopsis: In this portion of Scripture, Luke's gospel is particularly concerned with answering the question, "Who will participate in the kingdom of God?" Jesus' answer revolves around a shared meal at a prominent Pharisee's house which concludes with his telling of a parable with the intention of describing to them who will be included and who will be excluded. In the parable, various people make excuses for why they cannot attend the great banquet. In their place, the host asks his servant to invite the the poor, lame, blind, etc. to attend so the party will be full. In context, it is prophetic pronouncement against the religious of Israel who reject Jesus' invitation, and in whose place the poor, lame, blind, etc. will sit. For us today, it begs the question, "When are we going to follow Jesus and live in his kingdom?" The call is not simply to be a Christian (someone who prays the prayer) but to following Jesus with our all. The invitation is for now, and not tomorrow. The call is to follow Jesus today and not put him off for someone or something else, thus making excuses.
