SERIES: UNDER THE OIL OF GLADNESS
TITLE: Justice Made Happy
TEXT: Various
SYNOPSIS: Much fuss has been made parsing the differences between joy and happiness. Biblically, the difference does not appear to lie between joy and happiness as much as understanding from where it comes, from discerning between legitimate and illegitimate forms. For the Christian, joy and happiness find their source in Jesus as a gift of life, to be enjoyed with gratitude and service in the presence of a joyful and happy God. Certainly not everything in God's kingdom makes us feel happy, just as not everything that makes us feel happy belongs to God. But when happiness, like joy, finds its source is Jesus, it can also be of the deep, abiding kind that makes life enjoyable to live and love. If the problem with cynicism is that it offers critique without solutions, then justice is about offering solutions that will make others lives happier, more livable, and more productive - including our own. Gretchen Rubin in her book, The Happiness Project writes: "One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make other people happy. One of the best ways to make other people happy is to be happy yourself." Thus, one of the links between justice and happiness.
